AI-based Export Control & Sanctions List Screening

Export control and sanctions list screening is a sensitive yet highly relevant topic for internationally active industrial companies. Customers, countries, goods, spare parts, and supply routes must be carefully checked before offers, orders, or deliveries can be approved. In many companies, this screening is still largely manual, spread across various systems and knowledge sources. This leads to significant effort, breaks in the information flow, and uncertainty in the process: Which information is relevant? What checks have already been carried out? Are there any irregularities concerning customers, countries, end-uses, or product groups? And how is the decision documented in a traceable manner?

Project Description

Liquam is working with the customer to develop an AI-powered solution to support export controls. The goal is to automatically consolidate relevant transaction, customer, country, and product information, identify potential compliance requirements, and assist the relevant departments with assessment and documentation.

The solution does not replace the final expert or legal decision, but rather creates transparency, structures existing information, and reduces the effort required for manual research and documentation.

A practical example:

An international industrial company faced the challenge of integrating export-relevant checks more efficient, traceable, and better integrated into existing processes. Information was scattered across ERP systems, documents, emails, product data, and internal regulations. The goal was to establish a digital review and assistance process that automatically identifies relevant information, pre-structures workflows, highlights potential anomalies, and supports the processing by the responsible employees.

Your Advantage
  • More efficient review processes: relevant information is automatically consolidated and prepared for processing.
  • Greater transparency: export-relevant notes, data sources, and review steps are made visible in a structured way.
  • Reduced manual effort: research, preliminary checks, and documentation are significantly simplified.
  • Improved traceability: decisions, notes, and processing steps can be clearly documented.
  • Enhanced process reliability: anomalies concerning customers, countries, products, or transactions are detected early.
  • Integration into existing systems: the solution can be connected to ERP systems, document repositories, knowledge bases, and existing workflows.
  • Scalability: the approach can be gradually expanded – from assisted review to automated pre-structuring of complex processes.
Out Solution

In this project, Liquam is developing a customized AI-powered assistance solution for export control. The starting point is an analysis of existing processes, data sources, and audit requirements. Together with the client, relevant audit steps, necessary information, and roles within the process are defined.

The solution consolidates information from various sources, such as ERP data, customer and item data, internal guidelines, documents, emails, or knowledge bases. Based on this, the AI assists in pre-structuring export-relevant transactions, identifies potential anomalies, and provides the relevant information clearly to the responsible employees.

A central component is traceable documentation: The AI can structure notes, sources, interim results, and open audit points. This creates a transparent audit process where the final assessment is still performed by the responsible experts.

The solution is built modularly and can be expanded incrementally. Possible expansion stages include integration with ERP workflows, automatic notifications for transactions requiring review, the integration of internal regulations, a dashboard for open reviews, and the structured storage of audit results.

This results in a practical solution that views export control not as an isolated compliance process, but integrates it directly into the company's operational processes.
